Dialektikon 2012

is a new entertainment based on a revolutionary ’60’s happening and inspired by today’s Occupy movement and the Arab Spring. It’s a free mix of passionate radical speeches with poetry and folk song that becomes an open discussion for players and audience: how do we get ourselves out of this present mess and build a better world?

Dialektikon 2012

draws its inspiration from the Congress of the Dialectics of Liberation, a tempestuous event that took place at the Roundhouse, London, in July 1967, when from across the world intellectuals, activists, anarchists, hippies and poets gathered to debate how to liberate human society from the evils of capitalism, racism, war and environmental destruction.

The radical stars whose speeches are recreated here include controversial psychiatrist RD Laing who summoned the Congress, Black Power leader Stokely Carmichael demanding justice, Marxist philosopher Herbert Marcuse on the necessity of a truly socialist society, visionary scientist Gregory Bateson predicting climate change and Beat poet Allen Ginsberg teaching that we are all one.

Notting Hill jazz troubadour Michael Horovitz, old friend of both Laing and Ginsberg, shares his memories of the Congress while two of the original organisers and psychotherapist colleagues of Laing’s Dr Joseph Berke and Dr Leon Redler add their thoughts on its meaning today. Anatomy of Violence

, shot by distinguished documentary film-maker Peter Davis, plays through the breaks, and finally after the audience discussion there’s a poetry and song-fest led by Michael and Pete and open to all.

In the spirit of the ’60’s the all-women production team – producer Victoria Childs, director Jacky Ivimy, designer Ivana Nohel, film-maker Louise Stevens – are presenting all this as a
